Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis: “Accountability for international crimes is a deterrence factor”
On 19 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis received Dominique Hasler, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education, and Sport of the Principality of Liechtenstein, who was paying an official visit to Lithuania.
The meeting focused on support for Ukraine, its reconstruction, security and defence in the region, preparation for the NATO summit in Vilnius, and bilateral relations and cooperation within multilateral formats.
The Foreign Ministers agreed on the need to continue to support Ukraine as much as possible. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked Liechtenstein for its close cooperation on the special international tribunal and agreed to continue to work actively on this issue in multilateral formats. “The issue of strict accountability for war crimes, including the crime of aggression, is of great importance to us. Impunity encourages further aggression; on the contrary, a clear understanding that aggression is punished would serve as a deterrent,” the Foreign Minister said. Hasler stressed that her country’s position on this issue was identical.
The Foreign Ministers discussed their countries’ priorities for Presidencies. Liechtenstein will hold the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from 15 November 2023. Then Lithuania will take the helm.
During her official visit to Lithuania on 19 and 20 April, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education, and Sport of the Principality of Liechtenstein will meet with the Speaker of the Seimas (Parliament) Viktorija Čmilyte-Nielsen, the Minister of Education, Science and Sport of Lithuania Jurgita Šiugždinienė, and will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Antakalnis Cemetery to honour the memory of Lithuania’s freedom defenders, and visit the Ukrainian Center.
It is Hasler’s first visit to Lithuania.
