On 31 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, had a telephone conversation with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov.

During the conversation, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy expressed his condolences and solidarity with Azerbaijan over the tragedy that took place on 25 December near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan when an Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed. Minister Budrys emphasized the exceptional professionalism of the pilots who saved the lives of 29 people on board and the need to investigate the causes and circumstances of this tragedy thoroughly.

“A full and transparent investigation into the causes and circumstances of the tragedy is essential to prevent possible repetitions of similar tragedies in the future. Russia has suppressed GPS signals and has been responsible for other interference in the Baltic Sea region for some time now. We must unite our efforts to protect the security of civil aviation,” Budrys underlined.

Survivors and children of the victims were offered a rehabilitation treatment in Lithuania.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania noted that Russia poses an increasing threat to the international community, both through continued criminal military aggression against Ukraine and various acts of sabotage. During the conversation, the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy acquainted his Azerbaijani counterpart with the recent intensification of attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
