LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER HAD A CONVERSATION WITH THE EU’S HIGH REPRESENTATIVE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

On 12 February, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis had a telephone conversation with Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The main topic of the conversation between Minister A.Ažubalis and C.Ashton was the European External Action Service, which is currently being shaped.

Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said that all the EU member states had to be adequately represented in this service, and geographical balance had to be respected.

According to the Minister, this would encourage member states to invest their best human resources into the future service and in this way to contribute to its high-quality and effective activities.

During the conversation, providing Ukraine with a perspective of closer relationship with the EU was discussed, as well as the support for Georgia’s and Moldova’s aspirations for closer ties with the EU.

Minister A.Ažubalis said that these countries had to be also provided with a perspective of a visa-free regime with the EU.

Minister A.Ažubalis and C.Ashton agreed to meet in Brussels at an early date.

On 12 February, the new Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs also had conversations with Kazakh Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev and Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin.
