Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: We must reinforce deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank
On 4 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with a delegation of the German Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. The meeting focused on security threats arising from a build-up of Russian military forces near the border with Ukraine and in the territory of Belarus.
"Climbing Russian troop numbers in Belarus not only raise questions about the future of Belarus as an independent state, but, at the same time, pose a widening threat to the security of Lithuania and other countries in the Baltic region. We must reinforce deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank against this background,” said Landsbergis.
Landsbergis noted that, when deterring Russia, it was essential to maintain the unity of the Western allies and a firm position that all acts of Russian aggression against Ukraine would be met with the strongest response.
The participants of the meeting also discussed China’s economic pressure on Lithuania and the European Union as a whole, and the importance of the EU's unified, coordinated response to it.
