Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: We feel and especially appreciate the long-standing support of the U.S. Congress for Lithuania

On 23 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with a delegation from the U.S. Congress to discuss important bilateral issues, the security situation in and around Ukraine, security measures taken by Lithuania, and support shown by allies.

In the meeting, the Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of a robust and united European response to Russia’s aggression and attempts to redraw Europe’s borders.

“The security situation in the region has changed dramatically. As Putin is trying to redraw borders, we must ensure that Russia understands that losses will be greater than gains", Landsbergis said.

Landsbergis also noted that in 2022 Lithuania and the U.S. celebrated the 100th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and thanked for the long-standing political support of the U.S. Congress for Lithuania.

“The bilateral relationship between Lithuania and the U.S. is very positive. We feel the support of the U.S. Congress on all key issues. We are particularly grateful for funding the strengthening of defence capabilities of the Baltic states, and for the U.S. Congress's political support for the advancement of our relationship with the countries of the Indo-Pacific region," the Foreign Minister said.

The participants of the meeting also discussed support for democracy, ties with China and Belarus, as well as bilateral political and economic cooperation between Lithuania and the U.S.

The delegation from the U.S. Congress, led by the Senator Chris Coons and the Congressman Steve Cohen, is visiting Vilnius from 21 to 23 February. The main purpose of the visit is regional security and support for Lithuania and the Baltic states.
