Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: Ukraine’s EU membership needs to be taken seriously

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis says that granting Ukraine the EU candidate status is one of the key ways for European partners to effectively support Ukraine against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing brutal aggression.

“There is no more time to waste. We must start serious preparations for Ukraine’s accession to the EU now. Due to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, this country and Europe are at a special, incomparable moment - one of the major turning points in history. Ukraine is fighting for its own and for European security, and is defending European values. We have to bear this in mind when assessing prospects for Ukraine’s EU membership. This extraordinary situation requires extraordinary measures and solutions," Landsbergis said.

“Ukraine is a member of the European family and its place is in the European Union. Political statements must be accompanied by concrete steps,” Lithuania's Foreign Minister said.

On the evening of 13 March, Landsbergis and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba discussed the coordination of further additional sanctions against Russia with the EU and other like-minded Western countries.
