Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: Russia’s illegal aggression against the neighbouring state of Ukraine proves that we need to reassess Europe's security situation and threats posed to NATO members
On 3 March in Vilnius, the Foreign Ministers of the three Baltic states and the United Kingdom held a meeting to discuss Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, the situation in the region, and cooperation plans within NATO and other multilateral formats.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis, together with the British Foreign Secretary Elisabeth Truss, the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, and the Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets, discussed specific measures for defense and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. According to Lithuania's Foreign Minister, we should do our best to support Ukraine, while Russia ramps up its war efforts, as well as consider an additional package of sanctions.
“Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine deepens the humanitarian crisis, the number of war refugees is increasing, and the peaceful population is beginning to lack food, water, and medicine. Europe, the global democratic community, and international organisations must immediately mobilise efforts and resources to ensure humanitarian assistance to peaceful civilians," Landsbergis said. According him, it should be borne in mind that Belarus is actively involved in this illegal military offensive and must, therefore, face the same tough sanctions as Russia.
The Foreign Ministers also discussed the situation in the region and measures to strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank.
“Russia’s illegal aggression against the neighbouring state of Ukraine proves that we need to reassess the European security situation and threats posed to NATO member countries, especially on its eastern flank. We believe that the Alliance must promptly move from frontline deterrence to frontline defence in the Baltic region,” Landsbergis said.
