Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: Lithuania strongly supports Kosovo’s aspirations of EU integration

On 28 June in Rome, Italy, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo Donika Gërvalla on the margins of the Plenary Ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh/ISIS.

Landsbergis voiced Lithuania’s strong support for Kosovo’s independence, membership of international organisations, and aspirations of integration into the European Union. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also called on the new Kosovo Government to pay close attention to the implementation of EU reforms, in particular in the area of the rule of law, and to continue the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, which was the only means of normalising relations between Serbia and Kosovo, and a legally binding agreement.

The Second Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo thanked for the support of the country’s European integration aspirations and regretted that so far the dialogue with Serbia for mutual recognition in Brussels was not as intense as was hoped. Gërvalla also expressed a wish to take over Lithuania’s experience of European Integration, as Lithuania’s swift accession to the EU was a story of success.

The meeting was held on the initiative of Kosovo. This is the first meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Lithuania and Kosovo after the election of Kosovo's new Government on 22 March 2021.
