Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: I believe that Lithuania and Australia are entering a new stage of close cooperation

On 10 February in Canberra, the last day of his visit to Australia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Australian Minister for Defence Peter Dutton.

The meeting focused on such topical issues as the situation in Ukraine, relations with China, and opportunities for Lithuania and Australia to begin to cooperate in the field of security and defence.

“Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and China’s hostile actions in the Indo-Pacific region are no longer just a regional problem. These challenges threaten the security of the whole world and the rules-based international order. We believe that like-minded states must talk and seek ways to counter them together," said Landsbergis, who suggested initiating a dialogue between the National Defence Ministries of the two countries.

In meetings with Australian Senators, the Chairs and members of the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, and the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security David Fawcett ,Eric Abetz, Kimberley Kitching, and James Patersin, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister thanked them for such a warm welcome and for offering a helping hand with the partnership with Lithuania in various areas, including the intention to set up a friendship parliamentary group with the Baltic states to develop contacts between the legislators of the two countries.

At the National Press Club in Canberra, Landsbergis also spoke about attacks on the rules-based world order, focusing on the cases of Ukraine and Taiwan.
