Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis discussed topical issues of security and migration in the region with Pakistan’s Ambassador
On 27 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the newly appointed Ambassador of Pakistan to Lithuania Malik Muhammad Farooq. The meeting discussed topical issues of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Pakistan, migration and security in the region, as well as prospects for economic cooperation.
“It is important to continue the dialogue with our Asian partners on regional security and irregular migration management in view of the humanitarian and security crisis in Afghanistan, and to seek legal migration opportunities for qualified third-country nationals. We have to exploit the potential of both economic and trade cooperation with Pakistan, especially in the fields of agricultural exports and information technology,” said Landsbergis.
During the meeting, the interlocutors also noted that it was meaningful to continue bilateral consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Pakistan, cooperation within international organisations, which was beneficial for both countries, to promote cultural and academic exchanges, and to publicize information about opportunities for higher education studies in Lithuania.
On 26 January, Pakistan’s Ambassador Farooq, who resides in Warsaw, presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda. He is the 8th Ambassador of Pakistan accredited to Lithuania.
Pakistan recognised Lithuania’s independence on 8 September 1991. The countries established their diplomatic relations on 31 May 1994.
