Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis discussed possible cooperation in the fight against irregular migration with the Hungarian head of diplomacy

On 7 July, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó, who is taking part in the 4th Ukraine Reform Conference in Vilnius.

Landsbergis informed his Hungarian counterpart about increasing flows of irregular migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian state border. “We have a serious reason to believe that the Belarusian regime knows about it well and supports the increase in the flows of irregular migration. This is a hybrid attack against Lithuania and the whole European Union,” said the head of Lithuania's diplomacy. The Foreign Ministers discussed possible actions at EU level in response to such actions of Belarus and agreed to exchange their experiences gained in the fight against irregular migration.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also thanked Hungary for participating in NATO's Air Policing mission in the Baltic states, as well as for its support and solidarity in strengthening the security of Lithuania and the entire region. Hungarian pilots plan to return to guard the airspace over the three Baltic states in 2022 and 2025. “Lithuania and Hungary share common security interests and, as Europe faces new threats today, we need to be united and take joint action to prevent them,” said Landsbergis.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister invited Landsbergis to visit Budapest in the near future. Lithuania and Hungary will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations this autumn.
