Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis: Democratic parliamentary elections in Armenia — a strong mandate for the ongoing reforms

On 25 June in Yerevan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis, together with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg and the Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu, continued their visit to the South Caucasus, where they met with the President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian and the Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, whose party Civil Contract won snap parliamentary elections.

In the meetings with the Armenian leaders, the three Foreign Ministers of the three EU member states stressed the importance of the early parliamentary elections of 20 June for the further development of the country, as the elections were seen to be free and fair by international observers. The Foreign Ministers also emphasized the importance for the country's political forces to focus on addressing key challenges after the elections. The meetings discussed the security situation after the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, as well as the further implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), and preparations for the next Eastern Partnership summit scheduled for later this year.

"Both I and my colleagues expressed the EU's readiness to continue cooperating with the democratically elected Armenian National Assembly and the newly formed Government. We welcome positive steps and initiatives to reduce tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We are ready to contribute to the stabilisation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijan border, to promote the restoration of the atmosphere of confidence in the region, and to support further democratic reforms in Armenia," said Landsbergis at the meetings in Yerevan.

Tomorrow, on 26 June, the three Foreign Ministers will hold meetings in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, at the end of their visit to the region.
