Lithuania's Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis and his Spanish counterpart discussed bilateral and regional security issues
On 18 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis had a telephone conversation with his Spanish counterpart Arancha González Laya. The meeting focused on bilateral relations, regional security, the situation in Belarus, and key items on the European Union's agenda.
Minister Landsbergis said that Lithuania was interested in further strengthening relations with Spain and other Southern European countries. When speaking about bilateral relations, the head of Lithuania's diplomacy emphasised closer cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, and education. Lithuania's Foreign Minister thanked Spain for its contribution to strengthening the security of Lithuania and of the entire region.
Ministers discussed the situation in Belarus and the upcoming visit by the Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Madrid next week. “We have to support civil society in Belarus in every way that we can and its legitimate struggle for freedom and democracy, and seek accountability for violence against peaceful protesters,” said Landsbergis.
The interlocutors also exchanged their positions on the EU migration policy, emphasised strengthening the EU’s external borders.
