Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis and his Canadian counterpart discussed bilateral relations, support for eastern partners
On 7 July, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Marc Garneau to discuss topical issues of bilateral relations, security policy, Ukraine and Belarus.
Landsbergis reminded his Canadian counterpart about the upcoming 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and Lithuania. Lithuania's Foreign Minister also welcomed the ever-increasing bilateral political, economic and cultural relations and a unified position of Lithuania and Canada on defending democratic values from modern threats and challenges.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister drew attention to a difficult security situation in the Baltic Sea region facing the aggressive Russian and Belarusian behaviour, and thanked Canada for its contribution to strengthening the security of the region.
The Foreign Ministers discussed further support to Ukraine and civil society in Belarus, highlighting the need to continue their support for projects and cooperation to promote the implementation of Ukraine’s reforms. Landsbergis thanked the Canadian Foreign Minister for maintaining a principled position towards Belarus and for supporting international sanctions against the Minsk regime.
Finally, the Foreign Ministers affirmed their expectations to organise a joint meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the three Baltic states and Canada in Ottawa this year, as soon as the pandemic situation allows.
The meeting took place on the margins of the 4th Ukraine Reform Conference, which is being held in Vilnius on 7-8 July.
