Lithuania’s Foreign Minister extends his condolences for the loss of the first Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania after the restoration of the country’s independence

On 3 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius expressed his sympathy on the passing of the Archbishop Justo Mullor Garcia, Vatican’s first Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania after the restoration of the country’s independence.

“Lithuania highly appreciates the contribution of Archbishop Justo Mullor Garcia to the development of friendly relations between Lithuania and the Holy See. We will always remember him as a truly prominent friend of Lithuania, who supported our state’s endeavours to return to the family of international democratic community,” reads the Foreign Minister’s letter to the Secretary for the Relations with States of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

The Archbishop Justo Mullor Garcia was appointed as the Vatican Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania immediately after the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1991. The historic visit of Saint Pope John Paul II to Lithuania took place in 1993, during Garcia’s term of office. In 1997, the Archbishop Justo Mullor Garcia was awarded the 1st Class Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke for his support for strengthening of Lithuania’s independence and the relationship between Lithuania and the Holy See.
