LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER EXTENDS CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATH OF GEORGIAN SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN

On 1 October, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis extended condolences to Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Grigol Vashadze over the death of four Georgian soldiers in a land mine blast. The accident occurred in Afghanistan’s province of Helmand on 30 September.

“Lithuania highly values its successful cooperation with Georgia in Afghanistan’s province of Ghor in ensuring security of local residents and creating conditions for the province’s economic and social development,” Minister A.Ažubalis said.

Georgia is among those non-NATO countries that have sent the biggest number of troops to serve with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Georgia has a total of 925 military personnel serving in Afghanistan. One Georgian military doctor serves in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in the province of Ghor. Another Georgian civilian doctor works at the hospital in Chaghcharan, the capital of Ghor province. His activities are financed through Lithuania’s development cooperation and democracy promotion programme.
