Lithuania’s Foreign Minister congratulates Myanmar on the occasion of its Independence Day
On 4 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius congratulated Myanmar and its people on the occasion of the Independence Day, and wished success and long-term peace to the country.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister sent a letter of congratulations to the State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi expressing his gladness that the relationship between Lithuania and Myanmar was strengthening. This year, the Ambassador Ina Marčiulionytė, who resides in Beijing, was accredited to Myanmar and high-level visits are being planned.
Linkevičius invited Aung San Suu Kyi to pay a visit to Lithuania on 25-26 May 2017 and to attend the international conference of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) “Women’s Economic Empowerment: Creating Equal Opportunities in the World of Work”.
Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Myanmar were established on 8 October 2013. The first official meeting between the delegations of Lithuania and Myanmar took place on 13 October 2016, when the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas and Myanmar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin met on the occasion of the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
