LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER CONGRATULATED THE NEW SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

On 2 October, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas sent a congratulatory letter to newly elected Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland and wished him success in enhancing the values of this organisation: democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

Prior to this position, Th.Jagland was the President of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting). He has also held the positions of Norway’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Already in the first round of the election on 29 September, Th.Jagland obtained absolute majority (165) votes of the members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which was necessary to win the election. His rival, a representative of Poland Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, obtained 80 votes.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe runs the Secretariat of this oldest European political organisation and is responsible for the implementation of tasks of the Committee of Ministers, management of the budget and programmes and other day-to-day issues.
