Lithuania’s Foreign Minister completes his visit to Georgia, meets with the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament and delivers a public lecture

On 13 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius held a meeting with the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze and visited the Information Centre on NATO and EU, where he met with students of the University of Georgia.

The meeting with the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia focused on the constitutional reform in Georgia, which was currently being debated. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed that Georgia must ensure a transparent and open process, engaging both the public and opposition parties. “A general consensus, even if this is not likely to be done without a lot more time and effort, is always a better way to make key decisions that will determine the country’s future; this is the only way to ensure the sustainability of such steps and broad support for them,” said Linkevičius.

The Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Kobakhidze promised that Georgia would  appreciate absolutely every recommendation of the Venice Commission.

At the Information Centre on NATO and EU, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister and discussed Georgia’s path towards the EU and NATO, new challenges and opportunities with the students of the University of Georgia. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister called on young people to participate in the country’s political life and to support and encourage the government to consistently implement necessary reforms. It was noted that an active civil society was one of the most important pillars of democracy.

Linkevičius also discussed important issues related to Georgia’s domestic and foreign policy with representatives of the opposition and non-governmental sector.
