LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER AWARDS FILM DIRECTOR ARŪNAS MATELIS FOR PROMOTING LITHUANIA’S NAME
On 28 January, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas conferred film director Arūnas Matelis with the award of Foreign Ministry ‘The Star of Lithuania’s Millennium’ for promoting Lithuania’s name. While conferring the award, the Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked the film director for his creativity and for promoting Lithuania’s name, as well as for his ambassadorship in the sphere of culture.
Minister V.Ušackas also indicated that the world had highly rated the talent of film director Arūnas Matelis for his documentary film Before Flying Back to the Earth”.
A. Matelis was awarded the Best Director award in Documentary Feature category during the Directors Guild of America Awards 2006 for the documentary film Before Flying Back to the Earth. He is the first film director in Central and Eastern Europe to have been nominated such award.
A. Matelis has been making films since 1990. His films were screened and awarded in such international film festivals, as: the Cannes, Rotterdam, Turin, São Paulo, Oberhausen, Amsterdam IDFA, Leipzig, and many others.
The film director plays an active role in Lithuania’s cultural life. He is the chairman of the Guild of Documentaries of the Lithuanian Filmmakers Union. For his merits to Lithuania, A.Matelis has been awarded the Lithuanian National Prize and the Cross of Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.
