LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER: ATTENTION TO EUROPEAN SECURITY POLICY MUST NOT BE REDUCED

On 6 April, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip H. Gordon had a telephone conversation on the preparation for the meeting of U.S. President Barack Obama with heads of governments from Central and Eastern European countries in Prague and the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Tallinn.

Minister A.Ažubalis noted that Lithuania welcomed the agreement between the U.S.  and Russia on the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said that the country wanted to thoroughly discuss the issues regarding entrance into force of this Treaty with its allies at the nearest high-level meetings.

According to the Minister, the U.S. strategic weapons played an important role in ensuring Europe’s long-term security.

The Minister expressed trust that the changes foreseen by the treaty would not weaken the European security and defence policy with the presence of nuclear weapons in Europe as one of its most important elements.

“It is important for the policy of change not to become a zero policy of deterrence,” the Minister said.
