LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER AND THE U.S. CONGRESSMEN DISCUSSED DIRECTIONS OF REINFORCING TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONS
On 10 March in Washington, during the working visit to the U.S.A., Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Senators Richard Durbin and John MacCain, Congressman John Shimkus, Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs Howard Berman and chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe Robert Wexler. During the meetings with high-ranking members of the Congress, principal directions of reinforcing transatlantic relations, relations with Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, important NATO issues and expectations for the future, energy security and issues of restitution were discussed.
“The dialogue and relations with Russia should not become a substitute for the transatlantic strategy towards Russia and for the support to sovereignty of Ukraine and Georgia, as well as to their NATO integration aspirations. The U.S. and the European Union have to cooperate, seeking for constructive and value-based relations with Russia. We should make efforts so that Russia should meet its undertaken international commitments regarding Georgia,” said V.Ušackas.
The Minister stressed that it was very important to continue supporting Ukraine’s and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations and political, social and economic reforms in these countries.
On 11 March in Washington, Minister V.Ušackas will meet with national U.S. Security Adviser, Retired General James L.Jones. Jones and will attend a discussion on energy security and NATO issues.
