LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER AND THE MINISTER OF STATE AT THE FEDERAL FOREIGN OFFICE OF GERMANY DISCUSSED BILATERAL COOPERATION
On 13 January in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas met with Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany Cornelia Pieper and discussed bilateral political, economic, security and cultural cooperation.
During the meeting, the Minister stressed that Germany was a particularly important partner of Lithuania in the European Union and NATO.
Minister V.Ušackas thanked Minister C.Pieper for Germany’s contribution to the NATO’s air policing mission in the Baltic States.
In January, the German Air Contingent rendered the patrolling of the Baltic airspace to a French military unit.
Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted Lithuania’s expectation Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted Lithuania’s expectations for Germany’s support and close cooperation when organizing the Baltic Sea States Heads of Government Summit in Vilnius on 1-2 June and getting ready for Lithuania’s upcoming Chairmanship of the OSCE in 2011 and the Presidency of the European Union in 2013.
The Minister stressed that Lithuania aimed to make the Baltic Sea region the most competitive in Europe through united effort of the countries in the region.
Ministers V.Ušackas and C.Pieper discussed the issues of cooperation between Lithuania and Germany in the area of culture relations, as well as the implementation of joint Lithuanian-German projects in the fields of culture, education and tourism.
During the conversation, an idea was raised to organise this year a joint intellectuals’ meeting of the Lithuanian-German and German-Polish forums.
Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked Germany for its regular aid to the Lithuanian 16 February Gymnasium in Hütenfeld and supported Germany’s initiative to seek to give a status of a deepened German language teaching to one of Gymnasiums in Vilnius.
During the meeting, important political, trade and economic issues in relations of Lithuania, the European Union and Russia were also discussed.
Minister C.Pieper conveyed to Minister V.Ušackas an invitation of German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle to pay a bilateral visit to Berlin.
