LITHUANIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER AND PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DISCUSSED ENERGY SECURITY AND TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONS

During the meeting between Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek on 23 February in Brussels, energy issues and the Lithuanian energy sector received a lot of attention, transatlantic relations, EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood Policy, implementation of the Treaty of Lisbon, cooperation between the European Parliament and national parliaments, situation in Ukraine after the elections and other important issues on European agenda were also discussed. 

The President of the European Parliament welcomed the successful economic policy by the Government of Lithuania.

The President of the European Parliament took interest in the development of the Lithuanian energy sector. Minister A.Ažubalis spoke about the implementation of major Lithuania’s energy projects and thanked the European Parliament and President J.Buzek for active contribution to the shaping of a common European Union’s energy policy.

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the President of the European Parliament highlighted the importance of transatlantic relations.

“Lithuania views the U.S. presence in Europe as one of the most important factors for the continent’s stability,” Minister A.Ažubalis said.

Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy expressed satisfaction about the attention that the European Parliament dedicated to the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of democratic changes in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2009, the anniversary was marked at the European level. The Minister thanked President of the European Parliament J.Buzek for his personal support when organizing the conference, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact at the European Parliament on 14 October 2009.
