Lithuania’s Foreign Minister and Moldova’s new Ambassador discussed bilateral cooperation

On 11 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the newly-appointed Ambassador of Moldova to Lithuania Valeriu Frija discussed the situation in Moldova and topical issues related to bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Moldova.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed that reforms in the field of justice, the fight against corruption and the banking sector were necessary in order to restore trust of the people of Moldova in the country’s institutions and in its chosen European path. Linkevičius expressed his belief that Moldova would overcome the ongoing crisis and would form a new government, which would resolutely implement the necessary reforms.

Linkevičius noted that Lithuania supported the European integration aspirations of Moldova and expressed his gladness that the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement and the EU visa-free travel had already benefited the economy and the citizens of Moldova.

Earlier that day, the Ambassador Frija also met with the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Andrius Krivas.

Frija has served in Moldova’s diplomatic service since 1992. Prior to this, he served at the Embassy of Moldova in Germany, held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova.

On 11 January, the Moldovan Ambassador presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.
