Lithuania’s Foreign Minister and Indian External Affairs Minister discuss promotion of economic cooperation, education exchange

On 15 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius had a telephone conversation with the Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The Ministers noted that Lithuania and India enjoyed friendly relations and the two countries were prepared to continue to strengthen them.

“We are ready to make every effort to sign agreements with India on cooperation in the fields of agriculture, science and technology as soon as possible. This would open up further opportunities for entrepreneurs, researchers and students of the two countries,” said Linkevičius.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy said that the fact that more than 500 Indian nationals were studying in Lithuanian institutions of higher education showed that Lithuanian universities were recognised, open and that there was a large potential for academic cooperation which we needed to take advantage of.

Minister Linkevičius also expressed hope that progress could be achieved in the negotiation of the extradition treaty with India.

The Indian External Affairs Minister expressed her regret at not being able to visit Lithuania on 22-23 June as previously planned. The Ministers agreed to find a mutually acceptable date for her next visit in the near future.
