LITHUANIA’S FIRST AMBASSADOR TO INDIA PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA
On 8 April, Lithuania’s Ambassador to India Petras Šimeliūnas presented his credentials to President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil. During the conversation that followed the ceremony, the President and the Ambassador discussed ways and possibilities to further strengthen economic and cultural cooperation between the countries. The Ambassador inquired about India’s plans to open an embassy in Vilnius.
Lithuania established diplomatic relations with India on 27 April 1992. P.Šimeliūnas is Lithuania’s first Ambassador to India.
Lately, Lithuania has aimed to intensify relations with one of the world’s largest emerging powers. In 2009, the trade turnover between Lithuania and India exceeded 300 million Litas. India is famous in the world not only for its rapidly growing economy and huge market, but also for a very high concentration of scientific potential.
