The development Lithuanian-Ukrainian bilateral relations will receive a new impetus and more importance after Lithuania accedes to the European Union (EU), according to Undersecretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Rytis Martikonis, who led the Lithuanian Delegation at the session of the Commission on Lithuanian-Ukrainian Cooperation for European Integration, which took place on 18 February in Vilnius.
The Lithuanian officials handed in their proposals for the currently drafted Ukraine - EU Action Plan and presented the possible forms of Lithuanian support for the Ukrainian integration into the EU.
The Head of the Ukrainian Delegation, First Deputy Minister of Economy and European Integration Valeriy Pyatnytskiy, stressed that Ukraine was interested in Lithuania’s active participation in the EU-Ukraine dialogue and confirmed the Ukrainian interest in taking over Lithuanian experience of EU integration.
The Commission also discussed a review of Lithuania - Ukraine treaties with regard to Lithuania’s accession to the EU and touched upon other topical issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Rytis Martikonis briefed the Commission on the prospective activities of the EU Intergovernmental Conference.
The Commission on Lithuanian-Ukrainian Cooperation for European Integration was established in July 2003 as an advisory body of the Lithuanian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Council.
