On 17 February, Lithuania’s Embassy in Kyiv officially took over the role of NATO’s Contact Point Embassy in Ukraine by organizing a round table discussion in the run-up to NATO’s upcoming summit in Vilnius.
Participants of the discussion, including the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantas Adomėnas and allied ambassadors residing in the country, emphasized Ukraine’s particular importance for the security of NATO. Adomėnas noted that NATO’s doors should be widely opened to Ukraine at the upcoming summit in Vilnius and called on the Allience’s member countries to contribute to this common goal actively.
The Embassy of Lithuania will serve as the Allied Contact Point Embassy in Ukraine for the period 2023-2024, which is crucial for the security and future of Ukraine and the region as a whole. The Embassies of the United Kingdom and Canada handed over NATO’s Contact Point Embassy role to Lithuania’s Embassy. In times of peace, NATO’s Contact Point Embassy has the responsibility to coordinate the actions of NATO member countries, improving the Alliance’s image in NATO partner countries.
Lithuania will seek to maximally use its role as the Allied Contact Point Embassy to help Ukraine by accelerating its Euro-Atlantic integration and informing Kyiv’s diplomatic community about the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius.
