Lithuania’s Embassy celebrates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, honoring Lithuanian contributions

On 17 June, the Embassy of Lithuania, together with the office of Congressman Don Bacon, Co-Chair of the U.S. House Baltic Caucus, marked an important milestone at the historic Cannon House Office Building — the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Guests were presented with the documentary film “For Freedom – Į laisvę,” created for this occasion by Arvydas Reneckis in cooperation with the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture. The film tells the story of Lithuanian Americans and their contributions to the making of America — from Aleksandras Kuršius to the present day.

The celebration was further enriched by a special performance by the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Force Big Band, under the leadership of Cpt. Ričardas Čiupkovas.

In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador of Lithuania to the United States Gediminas Varvuolis emphasized the enduring importance of the Declaration of Independence of 1776 and the principles of freedom, equality, and national self-determination it enshrined. These ideals have inspired Lithuania and many other nations in their own pursuit of independence and sovereignty.

The Ambassador noted that people of Lithuanian descent have made significant contributions throughout America’s 250-year history. Across generations, Lithuanians have helped shape the nation in many eras and across diverse fields. Their impact can be seen everywhere — from revolutionaries who defended the ideals of freedom and workers whose labor strengthened the country’s economy, to today’s scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, and athletes whose achievements continue to inspire.

Today, Lithuania and the United States remain united by a shared commitment to freedom and an enduring partnership. The two nations continue to strengthen their close cooperation in security, energy, economic relations, culture, and beyond.

The lasting U.S.–Lithuania partnership was also highlighted in remarks by Genevieve Libonati, Deputy Director of the Office of Northern European, Baltic, and Arctic Security Affairs at the U.S. Department of State; Tom Jensen, Vice-President of Government Relations at the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission; and Col. John Wenzel, Director of the Joint Staff of the Pennsylvania National Guard.
