LITHUANIA’S EFFORTS TO SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC PROCESSES IN BELARUS WERE APPRAISED IN MUNICH

During Security Policy Conference that took place on 3-5 February in Munich Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis met with U.S. Senators Joseph Liebermann and John McCain and discussed situation in Belarus.

U.S. Senators appreciated Lithuania’s contribution to the international community’s efforts to support democratic processes in Belarus.

The Head of Lithuanian diplomacy told about the activities of the European Humanities University (EHU) in Vilnius and thanked the U.S. for financial support for the University in exile. Minister Valionis also took a favourable view of the EU and the U.S. cooperation on supporting Belarusian opposition and creation of civic society.

 Lithuanian Foreign Minister also acquainted U.S. Senators with Lithuania’s position on Georgia.

During the Conference Lithuanian Foreign Minister also met with his Georgian counterpart Gela Bezhuashvili.  The ministers discussed the situation in Georgia after energy crisis, regional conflicts settlement perspectives.

Minister  Bezhuashvili thanked for constant Lithuania’s assistance for Georgia’s reforms and accepted Lithuanian Foreign Minister’s invitation to visit Lithuania in the nearest future.
