LITHUANIA’S DIPLOMATIC MISSION IN GEORGIA WILL ASSUME THE DUTIES OF NATO CONTACT POINT EMBASSY

As of 1 January 2011, Lithuania’s diplomatic mission in Georgia will assume the duties of NATO contact point embassy in this country for a period of two years. The decision was made in the beginning of this week by NATO member countries. NATO members that have their diplomatic missions in partner countries of the Alliance can apply for assuming the functions of NATO contact point embassy. The decisions are reviewed every two years.

Currently, two Lithuania’s embassies serve as NATO contact point embassies. Lithuania’s Embassy in Belarus has actively performed the duties of contact point embassy since 2004. Lithuania’s Embassy in Moldova received these functions on 1 January 2009.

These two Embassies will act as NATO contact point embassies until 31 December 2010.

As NATO contact point embassies, Lithuania’s diplomatic missions first of all seek to familiarize the societies of the countries with Alliance’s activities, guidelines and priorities.

Conferences, discussions, fora and lectures are held to provide the citizens with diverse information about NATO. Contact point embassies also aim to enhance public knowledge of the possibilities and the perspective of country’s cooperation with Alliance.
