LITHUANIA‘S AND KALININGRAD REGION’S COOPERATION ENHANCED
On 8 February Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis met with the Governor of Kaliningrad Region of Russian Federation Georgy Boos, who pays a visit to Lithuania, and discussed Lithuania’s and Kaliningrad Region’s economic cooperation.
Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communication Petras Čėsna, Minister of Economy Kęstutis Daukšys, Minister of Agriculture Kazimira Danutė Prunskienė also took part in the working dinner with the Governor of Kaliningrad Region.
During the meeting special attention was paid to Lithuanian business and investment environment in Kaliningrad Region. Governor Boos stressed that recently adopted law of Russian Federation on special economic zone in Kaliningrad Region opened new possibilities for Lithuanian business in Kaliningrad.
Foreign Minister Valionis underlined that Lithuania is ready for close cooperation with Kaliningrad Region in modernisation of Sovetsk and Neman cellulose plants, and willing to share its experience in purification equipment building and to work together trying protect Neman from pollution.
The cooperation in the area of tourism was also discussed, the necessity to sign bilateral agreement on navigation through the Curonian Gulf and the waterways of Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region and to open the international Nida-Rybačyj border crossing point as soon as possible was considered.
