LITHUANIA‘S AMBASSADOR TO NATO ASSUMES THE TITLE OF DEAN OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC COUNCIL

Lithuania’s Ambassador to NATO Linas Linkevičius assumes the title of Dean of the North Atlantic Council.

It is a usual practice to convey the title of Dean of the North Atlantic Council to an ambassador, who has represented his country on the North Atlantic Council for the longest period of time and, therefore, is the most experienced one.

The Dean of the Council has the duty to express the opinion of the North Atlantic Council to third parties when necessary, and he enjoys the right to speak up first.

As the longest serving ambassador on the North Atlantic Council, the task of the Dean is to assist NATO’s Secretary General, the Alliance’s political leadership.

L.Linkevičius was appointed Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council in July of 2005. He held this position also in 1997-2000.

The North Atlantic Council is the principal decision-making institution within NATO. It is chaired by the Secretary-General. The Council brings together permanent representatives of the Alliance’s each member country at least every week.
