On 19 September, the Ambassador of Lithuania to the Holy See and the Sovereign Order of Malta Petras Zapolskas presented his letters of credence to the Lieutenant of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto.

After the ceremony, Lithuania’s Ambassador and the Lieutenant discussed bilateral co-operation between Lithuania and the Order of Malta. The interlocutors noted that ties between Lithuania and the Order of Malta had intensified significantly. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and the Order of Malta. On this occasion, a cooperation agreement that would further strengthen our bilateral relations in the areas of health care, social security and other fields of humanitarian cooperation was signed.

The Lieutenant of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto expressed the wish to visit Lithuania in 2018, during the country’s centenary celebration to personally familiarize himself with intensive activities of the Order of Malta in Lithuania.

The Order of Malta started its activities in Lithuania, when its Auxiliary Service was established in 1991. The Order of Malta’s volunteers are implementing more than 50 different social assistance projects in Lithuania. Malteser youth and child day centres operate in 14 towns nationwide. Today, the Order of Malta has 1,500 volunteers in Lithuanian 44 towns. The possibility of implementing joint projects also in other countries is currently under discussion.
