LITHUANIA’S AMBASSADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE KING OF MALAYSIA

On 5 February in Kuala Lumpur, Lithuania’s Ambassador to Malaysia Sigutė Jakštonytė presented credentials to King of Malaysia Mizan Zainal Abidin. The ambassador resides in Vilnius.

During the audience in the royal palace, Ambassador S.Jakštonytė expressed belief that bilateral relations between Lithuania and Malaysia, and cooperation in multilateral formats would strengthen in the future. The Ambassador indicated that Lithuania would seek to deepen its political dialogue not just with Malaysia, but also with other countries in Southeast Asia, and to develop exchange in the areas of tourism, culture, sport, education and science. S.Jakštonytė stressed that lately interest of the Lithuanian people in Southeast Asia was swiftly increasing.

The King of Malaysia showed interest in bilateral economic cooperation and possibilities to promote it more actively. The King agreed with the idea to increase the prospects of youth and academic exchange, the development of tourism.

The Ambassador presented priorities of Lithuania’s foreign policy, activities in the European Union and in the European-Asian partnership projects.

On 19-20 October in Vilnius, the first Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) of Transport Ministers is organised, during which the participation of Malaysia’s Transport Minister is also expected.

ASEM is an informal Asia-Europe dialogue and cooperation process, which joins together 27 European Union countries, the European Commission, 16 Asian countries and the Secretariat for Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Ambassador also informed the King about the events of the millennium of Lithuania’s name and “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009”.

Lithuania established diplomatic relations with Malaysia on 9 March 1994.
