LITHUANIA’S AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF GERMANY
On 28 April in Berlin, Lithuania’s Ambassador Mindaugas Butkus presented credentials to President of Germany Horst Köhler. President H.Köhler and Ambassador M.Butkus exchanged opinions on the bilateral relations, their development, and the plans for the nearest future.
The German Federal President took interest in the projects and plans of Vilnius – European Capital of Culture, highlighted the importance of bilateral cultural cooperation and stressed that cultural ties helped to develop people-to-people relations, without which bilateral relations would be only formal and blank.
During the conversation, the impact of the global financial crisis on both of the countries was also briefly discussed.
President H.Köhler conveyed his greetings to President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus.
Ambassador M.Butkus is the fifth Lithuanian Ambassador to Germany.
Lithuania and Germany established diplomatic relations on 28 August 1991.
Germany is one of the most important Lithuania’s foreign trade partners. In 2008, Lithuania’s foreign trade with Germany amounted to 12.5 billion Litas. In 2008, Lithuania’s export to this country amounted to 4 billion Litas and import was 8.5 billion Litas. In 2008, the balance of Lithuania’s foreign trade with Germany was negative (-4.5 billion Litas).
