LITHUANIA’S AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA
On 20 April, Lithuania’s Ambassador Vaclovas Šalkauskas presented credentials to President of Argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
After the ceremony, the Ambassador laid a wreath at the monument to General San Martin in the city centre of Buenos Aires.
V.Šalkauskas is the first Lithuanian Ambassador to Argentina. Previously, the Embassy had been headed by chargés d’affaires for seven years. V.Šalkauskas is a career diplomat; he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991.
Currently there are about 30 thousand Argentine residents of Lithuanian origin, who were born in Argentina. Lithuanian organisations are headed by the Lithuanians of second or third generation. About 1000 Argentine Lithuanians are taking part in the activities of fostering the Lithuanian identity.
The development of closer relations with Latin America is becoming more and more important for Lithuania. The Embassy in Argentina is the only Lithuanian Embassy in South America.
