Lithuania's Acting Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius expresses condolences on the passing of Professor Irena Veisaitė

On 11 December, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius expressed his condolences on the passing of Professor Irena Veisaitė.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Professor Veisaitė. The Lithuanian theatrologist, literature researcher, and founder of the Open Lithuania Foundation was loved, admired and respected by everyone who knew her. Professor Veisaitė's tireless efforts earned her numerous national and international awards. Throughout her career she blazed a trail for others by creating an enabling environment for civil society both in the independent state of Lithuania and Central and Eastern Europe.

Professor Veisaitė's intellectual and civic courage, her noble attitude toward the personal past, and active civic engagement gained her recognition and moral authority not only in Lithuania, but also in Europe. She was a shining beacon of hope and solidarity to the world.

That said, the Holocaust survivor Professor Veisaitė, known for her strength and noble engagements, may be gone, but her memory will live in our hearts forever. Just know her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched.

My deepest condolences to her family and friends, the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community, Lithuanian artists and cultural figures, and all those who knew and loved this outstanding personality. Her passing is a great loss for the people of Lithuania," reads the Acting Foreign Minister's condolence letter.
