Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dutch Army Commander has discussed situation in Ukraine and implementation of NATO collective defence measures

On February 26, Andrius Krivas, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs received General Tom Middendorp, Dutch Army Commander at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss situation in the east of Ukraine, implementation of the decisions of the NATO Summit in Wales, international security issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.  Vice-Minister Krivas expressed his appreciation to the Netherlands for their contribution into urgent implementation of the collective security measures. These measures were agreed last year at the NATO Summit in Wales.

On the topic of Ukraine, Krivas expressed his concern for violation of the Minsk Agreements, truce is broken from the side of the Russia-backed separatists. He has underlined the importance of enhancing international pressure to ensure that the agreements are complied with. According to the Vice-Minister, Ukraine must get all the necessary support, including strengthening defence capabilities of the country.

Ukraine has the right of self-defence envisaged by the UN Charter. Military assistance would raise the expenses of the potential spread of aggression and would thus create the preconditions of sustainable peaceful solution of the conflict. By fearing to assist Ukrainian defence capabilities we would silently indulge the powerful aggressor’ said Krivas at the meeting with the Dutch Army Commander.

The Lithuanian Army Commander Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas has invited the Dutch Army Commander to visit Lithuania, among other meetings - NATO Energy Security  Center of Exellence in Vilnius.
