LITHUANIAN-RUSSIAN INTERGOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION MEETING TO TAKE PLACE IN PALANGA

On 10-12 November the fourth meeting of Lithuanian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission chaired by Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis and Minister of Transport of Russian Federation Igor Levitin will take place.

The Commission is to discuss topical issues of Lithuanian-Russian  economic, social, cultural cooperation as well as cooperation in energy, transport and environment protection sphere.

Special attention will be paid to Lithuanian-Russian state border in order to start demarcation of the border, encourage coordinated modernization of border infrastructure, resolve the issue of navigation through the Curonian Gulf and Lithuanian and Kaliningrad region’s waterways.

The Commission will also discuss the implementation of project 2K, which is designed to improve cooperation between Klaipeda and Kaliningrad seaports and develop their competitive abilities. The commission will as well consider the progress and the prospects of implementing the international Lithuanian-Russian-Belarusian project – container train Merkurijus, that was launched in July.

The need to meet the obligations of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee concerning the environmental safety of the Curonian Spit, with regard to the threats that the exploitation of Russian oil field D-6 is posing, will be talked over.

The Commission will moreover readdress the issues of repaying the currency deposits of Lithuanian people with the Lithuanian office of the former Vneshekonombank, the return of Lithuania's cultural values and archives, the signing of Lithuanian-Russian agreement on cooperation in the area of pension funding and intergovernmental agreement on burial grounds of military and civil victims of war and repressions.

During the meeting Lithuanian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission is to sign two intergovernmental agreements - Lithuanian-Russian intergovernmental agreement on navigation through the Curonian Gulf and the waterways of Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region and Lithuanian-Russian intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in marine and airborne search and rescue operations at the Baltic Sea.
