LITHUANIAN-ROMANIAN POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS FOCUS ON COOPERATION DURING THE PERIOD OF LITHUANIA’S EU PRESIDENCY

On 21 March in Vilnius, Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dalius Čekuolis held a meeting with Cornel Feruţă, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, and discussed with him the strengthening of bilateral dialogue in the context of Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

During the consultations, Čekuolis thanked Romania for its support of Lithuanian Presidency’s priorities, including financial stability, smart growth, open and secure Europe, the Eastern Neighbourhood Policy, and the protection of the EU’s external borders.

Feruţă underlined that Lithuanian and Romanian foreign policy goals were similar - the EU policy, energy security, and transatlantic partnership, just to name a few. Lithuania and Romania see a great potential for successful cooperation in these fields. Feruţă suggested continuing to actively coordinate positions of the two countries on priority areas of the EU policy and to further strengthen successful transatlantic policy cooperation.

Čekuolis stressed that the solidarity of Romania and other EU member states with regard to EU common nuclear safety policy in the EU neighbourhood was of crucial importance for Lithuania. The Lithuanian diplomat also invited Romania to participate at the highest political level in the 3rd Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius this November.

Romania recognized Lithuania’s independence on 26 August 1991. Lithuania and Romania established diplomatic relations on 13 September 1991.
