LITHUANIAN REPRESENTATIVE SIGNS THE NAGOYA PROTOCOL TO THE CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
On 29 December, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Dalius Čekuolis signed the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Adopted in Nagoya, Japan, on 29 October 2010, the Protocol provides a legal framework for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.The Article 1 of the Nagoya Protocol states that the objective of the Protocol is “the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies, taking into account all rights over those resources and to technologies, and by appropriate funding, thereby contributing to the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components”.
The Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania will now have to ratify the Nagoya Protocol.
