Lithuanian representative meets with the Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, reiterates that Lithuania does not recognize the annexation of Crimea

On 27 April in New York, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN, Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė met with Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, who is participating in the Fourteenth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII). The Crimean Tatar leader presented the situation of the Crimean Tatars and thanked Lithuania for its continued support to their efforts to protect their rights.

The Lithuanian Permanent Representative reiterated that Lithuania would not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea. She emphasized the need for the international community to maintain its attention on human rights, the situation of Tatars and other ethnic minorities in Crimea.

Ambassador Murmokaitė stressed that the Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine deployed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights played a crucial role in reporting on the human rights situation in Crimea. The Ambassador underlined that the current UNPFII session demonstrated the need to keep the issue of Ukraine, including Crimea, on the agenda of the UN Security Council and other UN bodies.
