LITHUANIAN REPRESENTATIVE IS ELECTED A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN FACT-FINDING COMMISSION
On 9 December in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, Lithuanian representative, Professor from the Department of International and European Union Law of Mykolas Romeris University Justinas Žilinskas was elected a member of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission.
This Commission was created in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, adopted by the 1977 additional protocol on the protection of victims of international armed conflicts. The Commission is composed of fifteen individuals with high morals who acting in their personal capacity. The purpose of the Commission is to investigate allegations of grave breaches and serious violations of international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions. It shall provide interested parties with the report of findings and with appropriate recommendations.The international law for the humanitarian treatment of the victims of war is standardized through the Geneva Conventions, comprising four treaties and three additional protocols.
Experts from Algeria, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and Uruguay are also elected members.
The first meeting of the newly elected members of the Commission is due in March 2012 in Bern.
