LITHUANIAN PRESIDENCY TO PRESENT THE POSITION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU AT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Minister of Finance Rimantas Šadžius, Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, Vice-minister of Finance Algimantas Rimkūnas and Vice-minister for European Affairs Vytautas Leškevičius are attending the plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg which commences today.

On 10 September Rimantas Šadžius, the Minister of Finance will present the position of the Council of the European Union on the European Banking Union along with its position on the Directive on credit agreements relating to residential property. The Foreign Affairs Minister Linas Linkevičius will address the issue of encouragement of the digital agenda for growth, mobility and employment and will deliver his statement on the threats to the freedom of the media and the surveillance of citizens. Vice-minister of Finance Algimantas Rimkūnas will address the issue of the EU budget for 2014.

On 11 September Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius will attend the traditional plenary session debates at the European Parliament concerning the state of the Union, during which the main statement will be delivered by the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso. At the debate, the Minister will also deliver the statement on behalf of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on the EU’s common security and defence policy.

During the visit the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs will attend a meeting with the Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič and will discuss the most relevant issues of legislation. The most important issues with regards to the agenda of the European Parliament will also be discussed at a meeting with the elected members of the European Parliament from Lithuania.

The representation of the Council of the EU in the relations with the European Parliament is one of the key duties of the country holding the Presidency of the Council.
