Lithuanian-Omani intense political agenda leads to specific business projects

On the second day of his visit to Oman, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Minister of Commerce and Industry of Oman Ali bin Masoud bin Ali al Sunaidy and discussed opportunities for bilateral economic cooperation, and plans to tap more efficiently into the existing potential.

“Information technology, bioenergy, water and waste management, agriculture and food industry are precisely those areas where the two countries have already established contacts and are ready to develop their collaboration more intensively,” noted Linkevičius.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister was accompanied by a delegation of businessmen representing these sectors. This is already the third business delegation to Oman over a two year period.

As regards bilateral business cooperation, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed that intense political dialogue and permanent business relations had already borne first fruits. The Lithuanian IT company Softneta and its Omani partner signed an agreement on the development and management of a medical imaging archive system in one private clinic in Oman. Softneta has also submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Health of Oman to develop such a project at the national level.

In a meeting with the advisor to Oman’s Minister of Health and representatives from the Sultan Qaboos University, representatives from Lithuania’s private and public sectors in health shared their best practices in maternal and child health care, emergency medical care, the introduction and application of innovative and interactive methods of remote training/simulation for medical staff with an aim to ensure patient safety and quality care. Possible joint projects were also discussed.

In order to achieve progress in economic cooperation, the Lithuanian and Omani Foreign Ministers signed a Joint Communiqué on 11 April. Both sides committed to conclude bilateral agreements on economic cooperation, avoidance of double taxation, promotion and protection of investment. These agreements will facilitate further development of mutually beneficial economic cooperation and, especially, of business relations.

The Vice-Minister of Agriculture of Lithuania Rolandas Taraškevičius, who is visiting Oman as part of the delegation led by the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture of Oman discussed cooperation in food industry and agriculture, as well as a matter of great importance in business – Oman’s veterinary certification specifics.

Linkevičius is accompanied by representatives from such companies as Softneta, Vitera, Envija, Grainmore, IT in medicine cluster, Crisis Management Centre and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also gave an interview to The Times of Oman daily newspaper.
