LITHUANIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS DISMISSES SPECULATIONS

Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not received any data from competent bodies on diplomats who had hidden facts of their cooperation with KGB.

We draw attention to the fact, that Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not authorised to carry out lustration procedures. In compliance with Lithuanian laws, such obligation is laid on the Lustration Commission.

Clearances to work with the information, which is considered a state secret of Lithuania, are granted to diplomats according to the rules established by the State Security Department of Lithuania. The reliability of Lithuanian diplomats is confirmed according to corresponding rules of the NATO and European Union bodies. Persons, who do not pass the check of this kind and are not granted such clearances, cannot work in diplomatic service.

Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs relies on the competence of Lithuanian state institutions, partners in NATO and the EU when it comes to solving these issues.
