LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS RECEIVED THE NEW AMBASSADOR OF UKRAINE
On 6 May Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas received Ambassador of Ukraine to Lithuania Ihor Prokopchuk. This is the first meeting of the Minister with the newly appointed Ukrainian Ambassador, who presented credentials to the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus on 17 April. During the meeting such issues as Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration, Ukraine’s role in development of democratic space in the Eastern neighbourhood, its participation in resolution of so-called “frozen” conflicts, bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Ukraine, forthcoming official visit of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to Lithuania were discussed.
P. Vaitiekūnas wished the Ambassador success in his work and marked that today the way Lithuanian and Ukrainian nations have gone towards qualitatively new free and democratic statehood becomes an inspiring example for the whole region.
“It is important for the Ambassador in his new office to continue pursue further strengthening of Lithuania’s and Ukraine’s relations, that would benefit inhabitants of our countries and of the whole Eastern neighbourhood,” Minister P. Vaitiekūnas said.
Ambassador I. Prokopchuk is the fifth Ukrainian Ambassador residing in Vilnius.
Lithuania and Ukraine established diplomatic relations on 12 December, 1991.
