LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS HAD A CONVERSATION WITH THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE
On 10 August, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas had a telephone conversation with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
During the conversation, Foreign Minister P.Vaitiekūnas informed the United States Secretary of State about the critical situation in Georgia, stressing that the situation was intense and aggravating further.
Minister P.Vaitiekūnas informed United States Secretary of State C. Rice that while carrying out military actions, Russia completely ignored the fact that civilians were being harmed in Georgia and civil infrastructure objects were under destruction.
‘We have to name very clearly that this is aggression against the Independent state of Georgia,’ indicated Minister P.Vaitiekūnas during the conversation.
While speaking with United States Secretary of State C. Rice, Minister P.Vaitiekūnas requested the U.S.A. to employ all the available leverage on signing the ceasefire agreement between Russia and Georgia as soon as possible. The Minister stated the fact that Georgia had fully pulled its forces out of South Ossetia and handed in a note to Russia, in which it is indicated that Georgian armed forces ceased fire in South Ossetia. However, Russia did not halt fighting.
During the conversation, United States Secretary of State C. Rice highlighted that all international institutions, including the EU member states, had to be united in demanding to halt the hostilities.
She also noted that speaking about the situation in Georgia, it was necessary to stress very clearly the shameful parallel lines between the former Soviet and current Russian aggression.
